Math Specialist
The Free School holds the view that everyone deserves equal access to economic,
political, and social rights and opportunities. To study social justice is to identify and
address the structural issues that dramatically impact quality of life for vulnerable
populations. This tenant informs the non-traditional approach that the Free School takes
in supporting students on their learning journey. This outlook also impacts how we
approach traditional subjects in school, such as literacy, math, science, and history.
We honor student choice and facilitate student centered learning through play and
exploration, constructivist teaching, collaborative work, and self directed student
initiatives. We support social and emotional development through conflict resolution,
mediation, personal reflection, diversity awareness, and community responsibility..
We are seeking a part-time math specialist to provide instruction and support to our
mixed-age classroom of learners. This position would assess the initial skills and abilities
of students, then build curriculum and identify activities to encourage learners’ growth
in understanding and utilizing fundamental mathematic principles. Ideal candidates
would have a dynamic, flexible, upbeat, hands-on approach to math education. Hours are
flexible but must be within the normal school day (9am-3pm) and align with the school’s
other scheduling needs.
Duties:
Facilitate a dynamic, supportive, democratic learning environment for mixed-age
classroom of learners aged 3-11
Meet learners’ physical, emotional, academic, social, and behavioral needs to
create and support an environment where emotional and physical safety of the
most importance
Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning
experiences in the areas of mathematics and associated fundamentals; develop
schemes of work and lesson plans
Establish and communicate clear needs and objectives for all learning activities,
including necessary preparations of supplies, facilities, and instructional
resources
Mentor, instruct, and monitor students in the use of learning materials and
equipment
Maintain an upbeat and flexible approach that allows curriculum to change
depending on students’ needs and interests
Provide appropriate feedback and reports the progress of individual students;
prepare and communicate updates regarding students’ activities, needs, and
progress
Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development;
update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by law,
district policies, and school regulations
Participate in limited required trainings, school meetings, parent meetings, and
school events
Requirements:
Bachelors degree or higher in math or math education from an accredited
institution; OR relevant teaching experience
A student-centered perspective that highly regards the perspectives, inclinations,
and opinions of all learners, with an expert ability to assess individual needs
A passion for radically non-traditional, democratic, socially just education
A team player with a positive attitude, great collaborative skills, and excellent
communication skills (both verbal and written)
Energetic, self-starter and self-motivated; able to identify and address issues and
ways to improve

Reading Specialist K-8
The Free School is located in the Mansion/South End neighborhood of Albany NY. Using a diverse set of strategies and methods, reading teachers provide individualized lessons and the support children need to learn to read and comprehend meaning from printed words.
Job requirements:
Willingness to support learners in person and virtually
Five or more years of successful teaching experience including experience working with at-risk students
Bachelor’s Degree, Masters in Reading or Reading Endorsement
Appropriate certification/licensure
Experience presenting to and working with teachers to improve their practices
Background and training in literacy/reading at multiple grade levels
Ability to develop and sustain positive working relationships with students,
staff, parents and colleaguesTechnology skills (able to use MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
Exceptional communication, data analysis, leadership and organizational skills
As a reading specialist, your day-to-day duties might include the following tasks:
Conducting assessments to determine student reading levels
Creating reading plans to match student ability and learning styles
Guiding children through reading and writing activities to help them overcome obstacles to literacy
Consulting with parents and teachers to recommend at-home strategies to improve reading skills
Coordinating school-wide reading intervention and literacy programs
This position is for a 30 week period beginning October 2020 for approximately 12 hours per week. You will be employed through Albany City Schools at approximately $28/hour.

Internships
The Free School, a democratically run preK-8th grade independent school in the south end of Albany, NY, offers a comprehensive, half hear or yearlong residential internship program that includes valuable learning experiences both in and outside of school. Our program offers the opportunity to intern at the longest running urban free school in the United States, and with ongoing support and guidance from members of the teaching staff, gain firsthand experience in a uniquely child-centered learning environment. Many former interns have gone on to teach at other alternative schools, public schools and some have even gone on to start their own schools. Our residential internship program is a typically a full school year commitment, but we are open to 3- or 6-month internships as well. The school year for us (including a staff orientation and work week) generally runs from the last week in August to the second week in June.
We are seeking 1-2 residential interns and 2-3 nonresidential interns for the 2020-2021 school year even in these uncertain times.
Ideal candidates will:
Have strong tech skills, enthusiasm and creativity to assist in distance learning projects
Have experience fundraising utilizing crowdsourcing platforms and capital campaigns to help build our endowment
Social media skills…Facebook, Instagram are the platforms we currently utilize. We are open to being more present on Twitter and TikTok. We also want to further develop our YouTube channel.
