Fostering Growth Through
Self-Directed Learning

Our Approach

Our educational philosophy is grounded in empowering students through self-directed learning. By placing the learner at the center, we encourage autonomy, critical thinking, and collaboration.

Our approach nurtures intellectual, social, and emotional growth, embracing a holistic vision that prepares students for meaningful contributions to society. As students chart their unique educational journeys, they are supported by dedicated educators who mentor, guide, and inspire every step of the way.

Benefits of Self-Directed Learning

  • Inclusive Environment

We embrace diversity to ensure all students, regardless of their backgrounds, feel welcomed and included. Our safe space is characterized by mutual respect and understanding, where the unique perspectives and identities of each student are celebrated and integrated into the learning experience.

  • Emotional Safety

We prioritize emotional well-being by cultivating an environment free from judgment and competition. Students are encouraged to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns openly. Our educators are trained to facilitate discussions that are empathetic and supportive, helping students navigate their emotions with confidence.

  • Intellectual Freedom

We foster safe spaces so students are free to explore ideas without fear of failure or ridicule. This freedom encourages intellectual curiosity and critical thinking, allowing students to engage deeply with subject matter and pursue their passions fully. Mistakes are viewed as essential learning opportunities, fostering resilience and adaptability.

Planting Seeds of Self-Sufficiency

No Child Left Inside

An important part of the AFS experience is getting outdoors into nature. Children are born naturalist and they’re allowed to explore the world with all of their senses, experiment safely within the environment, and communicate discoveries with those around them.

Not only do our students experience outings and hiking, but the AFS has access to a 200-acre tract of woods in Grafton, just across the way from the Peace Pagoda. This is just another aspect of specialized learning to enroll wilderness skills from natural exploration.

It’s truly amazing to see how our students organize themselves, support voting processes of leadership, and participate in some of the most daring adventures offered in the clear wilderness. Teaches and students alike are fascinated by the discoveries and opportunities to do something unique, original, and authentic around learning.

Food Is Life: Make It Healthy & Fresh

Our kitchen is a fully functioning classroom where students are afforded two hot meals every day from chosen plans they help create, prepare, and enjoy. As it is through our backyard garden where students are connected to the food they eat.

AFS also visits local farms and engage in discussions about nutrition, food justice, farming, and economic sustainability. It’s as if the entire experience is made just for them.
